Things changed when Tadamori became Governor of Bizen. The Retired Emperor Toba had vowed to build a temple, and Tadamori raised it for him: the Tokuchōju-in, a hall thirty-three bays long, in which he set up a thousand and one images of the Buddha. It was dedicated on the thirteenth day of the Third Month in the first year of Tenshō. By way of reward, it was decreed that Tadamori should have the first province that fell vacant; and as it happened the province of Tajima was vacant at that very moment, so it was given to him. Nor was that all. The Retired Emperor was so delighted that he admitted Tadamori to the Courtiers' Hall; and so, at the age of thirty-six, Tadamori for the first time set foot in it.
