The bell of the Jetavana Monastery tolls, and in its voice there sounds the echo of a single truth: that all things pass away. The blossoms of the twin sala trees, which turned white in the hour of the Buddha's death, bear witness by their colour to the law that those who flourish must surely fall. The proud do not endure; they are but a dream upon a spring night. The mighty, too, perish at the last, and are no more than dust before the wind.
